Tootoomoo, Islington

TootoomooLast week I caught up with Chloe over a delicious Asian feast at Tootoomoo, in Islington. Tootoomoo are a small collection of restaurants based in North London, namely Highgate, Crouch End and Highbury & Islington. Calling on influences from Japan and Thailand, Tootoomoo is a Pan Asian restaurant, serving up affordable cuisine in some of my favourite areas of London.Having eaten at the Crouch End branch on a number of occasions (the first being after we first viewed our flat 2 years ago!), I was excited to see what their Islington restaurant had to offer. I believe this branch only ever used to be takeaway, but it now has a small seated area at the front, offering a dine in experience. Although it was early on a Thursday night, and the restaurant aspect was fairly quiet, it was clear that local residents love eating here from the constant stream of delivery drivers!Elderflower Tootoomoo cocktailWe began our evening with two of their Elderflower Tootoomoos - a gin based cocktail, with sparkling elderflower and fresh mint. This was shortly followed by our Asian feast (we asked if every thing could be delivered to the table at the same time). We decided to try a few Tootootapas (small plates, ideal for sharing or as a starter), and a couple from the main Plates menu.Vegetarian potstickersSmokey crispy chickenWe chose edamame (obv - love edamame), vegetarian potstickers (LOVED these!), crispy smoked chicken, chicken pad Thai, beef Rendang curry and Japanese brown rice.I'd never tried the potstickers before, and I'm so glad we did as they were my favourite part of the entire meal. Would highly recommend! I couldn't choose between the Pad Thai and the Rendang. These are always my go-tos when eating Asian food, and they were both delicious. The edamame and brown rice perfectly complimented the rich flavours of the main dishes, and the saltiness of the crispy smoked chicken. I love the latter too, but it was just too big of a serving for us to finish. I always find that I'm drawn to the crispy or fried items on a menu, but after a few bites, I'm out!Tootoomoo Pad ThaiTootoomoo Beef RendangThe manager recommended we finish our meal with one of Tootoomoo's frozen yogurts, so I chose the Oreo flavour, whilst Chloe picked pistachio. Both seriously yummy, and a great way to end.Tootoomoo frozen yogurtTootoomoo: 4/5

  • Great location, just minutes from Highbury & Islington station
  • Dishes are perfect for sharing
  • The service was fab!
  • Some of the dishes were just a little too sweet or salty for me personally
