DIY Dip Dye Shorts

I have been following Sabo Skirt on Facebook, Instagram and via their blog for a while now. They are always designing, making and selling the most beautiful clothing. One particular item of theirs that has stood out to me over the recent weeks, are their amazing pairs of dip dye shorts. I've seen many other replicas also being sold online but for very expensive prices, so I decided to try and make my own pair. 

I absolutely love high waisted shorts and own many pairs of plain denim ones, but nothing quite as funky as these. Not only did I end up dip-dying them, but I also added studs to the one side. 

They ended up being pretty simple to create and only cost about £10 to make - much cheaper than what other retailers are selling them for. 

1. It's always best to follow the instructions on the dye packets perfectly. Firstly you add the dye contents to 500ml of warm water and stir thoroughly. 

2. You then fill a bucket with 6 litres of warm water and stir in 250g of salt. 

3. Then add the dye to the bucket and give it another good stir.

4. I then clipped my shorts onto two coat hangers, as I didn't want to dye the whole length of the shorts, and layed them over the side of the bucket so that only half of the shorts were submerged in the dyed water. 

5. You need to keep them submerged in the dyed water for roughly an hour.

6. Once the hour is complete, remove the shorts, repeat the process with your second colour of dye and hang the other half of the shorts in the dyed water. Leave for a further hour and then remove again and allow to dry. 

The dye seemed to take effect over night as they dried and the finished result yesterday morning was this...

I didn't know whether to keep them like this or stud them. So I decided to keep the other pair (low rise Topshop skinnies originally) for the summer, on the beach etc and then stud these ones. 

The following photo's are of them on. The colours make them more Spring/Summer wear, but I think they could be dressed up with tights and heels for a night out.

It annoys me that companies are selling shorts like these and other designs for ridiculous prices. I've seen some as much as £90 and knowing they only cost me £10 in materials and 3 hours maximum to make, I really want to make some more and sell them... would any of you be interested in buying some if I did that?!

I'm currently watching about 20 pairs of denim and white denim shorts/jeans on eBay so I may well set up a little blog shop soon. The possibilities with these are endless and I really want to try studded cross pockets on the next pair :) x
