The Attendant

The Attendant Fitzrovia

The Attendant cafe come coffee shop, is a restored Victorian public convenience based in Fitzrovia. With other branches popping up all over London, you may find it difficult to find this little gem… as it’s located underground! Yes that’s right, this cute, unique coffee shop is actually an old, fully restored toilet below ground.

Based on a corner in Fitzrovia, the ornate detail of the entrance way is inviting, leading you down some tiled steps into a beautiful white tiled cafe with metal stools, gold lights and wooden counter tops. You can choose to sit at traditional tables or find a seat at the urinals (still with original flush attached to the wall above).

Serving up a small menu of food and delicious coffee, this tiny establishment is quirky in every sense of the word, and extremely welcoming. The staff are helpful, the food amazing and the coffee – even better!

I visited The Attendant last summer with a friend, where we sipped on iced coffees in cute jars, and recently I stopped by for a works meeting where I enjoyed a latte and pastry. If you’re ever in the Fitzrovia area of central London, perhaps shopping on Oxford Street, I would highly recommend venturing away from the hustle and bustle and stepping down into this gem. As it’s based a little way from the action of the popular tourist streets, you’ll find it’s relatively quiet on weekends. A rarity in London!
