Last Friday both myself and Stew attended a cycle based workout at Virgin Active, in Mayfair, called ‘The Pack‘. Designed to pitch teams against each other in a competitive and fun environment, each team works together to accomplish challenges… And burn a hell of a lot of calories! Not being particularly sporty, and never having stepped foot inside a gym before, this was certainly a nerve racking experience. However, I’m so glad that Stew pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone, as I had so much fun!
Yes it’s hard work, there are times when you feel like you’re going to die and you just want to give up, but behind all the pain and sweat, it’s really a great way of getting in shape and having a laugh whilst doing so.
With the music pumping and the instructor guiding you on how to build up your resistance and RPM, you soon get into the swing of things. And once you’ve overcome the initial ‘oh my god, I can’t do this’, you find yourself getting super competitive and wanting to put your all into the workout to try and help your team win. Plus the instructor is constantly shouting words of encouragement and if you are struggling at any time you can simply lower your resistance and take it a little easier. I definitely had to do this on more than one occasion! With a towel on one side and a water bottle on the other, you’re also given breaks to help re-charge and cool down.
The idea of this particular event was to pitch teams of bloggers against each other in the ultimate blogger challenge! We were in yellow – The Fashion Pack – and were up against team blue ‘The Beauty Pack’ and team pink ‘The Food Pack’. Our pack was led by Ali Gordon, and of course I ended up being right at the front of the class next to him. Ha!
There are lots of different mini challenges during the 45 minute session including ‘Hold The Line’ where your whole team try to hold the same RPM for the longest duration. Or ‘Speed Freaks’ where you try to cycle as fast as possible around a track and ‘Sumo’ where you build up the resistance.
The one part I really struggled with was getting up off the saddle and standing up peddling. I don’t know why but I just couldn’t get up! My legs were like jelly and the moment I tried to stand I lost all momentum.
Unfortunately our team didn’t win, (probably down to me :P), but we had a great time all the same.
And afterwards we treated to some nutritious snacks by Soulmate Food and a complimentary blow dry to set us up for our Friday night! I’ve certainly never had such a healthy start to the weekend before. It definitely beats work beers!
