Lifestyle | Charlie Bigham, Luxury Pre-Prepared Meals

Charlie Bigham sweet and sour

After seeing a number of Charlie Bigham’s pre-prepared meals in my local supermarket, I was excited to review a couple of their new flavours. If you haven’t heard of the brand before, Charlie Bigham’s, revolutionises the classic ‘ready meal’, by bringing restaurant inspired dishes to your home. Forget microwaving, these meals are designed to be cooked in the oven, so you don’t lose any of the fantastic flavours or textures in each dish. (It also makes it perfect for people like me who don’t own a microwave).

This autumn, Charlie Bigham’s released six new dishes, including family favourites such as Sweet and Sour Chicken, Chicken Chow Mein, Lamb Rogan Josh, Sausage and Mash, Chicken Ham and Leek Pies, Steak and Mushroom Pies.

With aromatic sauces, full of fantastic spices and fresh ingredients, they deliver food that is easy to cook and great to eat.

Charlie Bigham sausage and mash

I have tried the Sweet and Sour Chicken, which is served with a deliciously creamy egg fried rice, and the Sausage and Mash – a premium Cumberland sausage swirl in a port, red wine, sage and rosemary gravy. Pie and mash is my favourite, classic British dish, and although this dish is made with sausage instead, it brought back many of the same memories from my childhood. The mash is beautifully smooth and the wine is super rich in flavour. We added steamed broccoli and roasted carrots to our dish, which we had going spare from another meal we’d had that week. But when it comes to portion sizes, the sausage and mash itself is plenty to feed two people.

We also tried the Sweet and Sour Chicken, which comes with an egg fried rice. Again, we added pak choi to add some greenery to the dish, but the sweet and sour chicken itself has lots of onion, peppers and water chestnuts in. So it’s certainly not lacking in ingredients or flavour – we just have to have some kind of greens with all of our meals! I particularly enjoyed this meal as it felt like a treat. I would never normally make myself egg fried rice at home, but would often order it as part of a takeaway. However, with Charlie Bigham’s dish, you have that same feeling of being a treat, but can rest easy knowing that it’s not bad for you and you won’t need to work it off tomorrow at the gym. It’s full of fresh, great ingredients and tastes super healthy.
