If you ever find yourself in North London, specifically Crouch End, please please please visit The Haberdashery. Located just off Park Road, which leads up to Muswell Hill, this beautiful little gem is nestled away from the busy high street, and boasts a wonderful breakfast, lunch and cake menu.
Open 9am – 6pm, The Haberdashery is a very kitsch spot with tea served in vintage teapots, food dished up on mismatched crockery, and bunting adorning the walls. In fact, there are so many fun and unusual objects decorating the cafe, that you may find yourself looking around in awe, rather than listening to whoever is joining you.
I headed here when my vegan friend was visiting for the weekend, as I also knew they served up a selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes. (Plus I knew she’d fall in love with the decor!). Although it was bang on lunch time, and Good Friday, we managed to get a table at the front of the cafe, in the window. From here we could gaze outside and watch passersby, whilst having a great view of the cafe itself and soak up the friendly and cosy atmosphere.
We each chose the ‘Secret Garden’ juice to drink, which consisted of beetroot, apple, celery and mint, and created this wonderful ombre effect.
For mains, I chose the Salad of The Week, which changes weekly as the name suggests. That week it consisted of warm goat’s cheese, grilled artichoke, barley and an array of vegetables and salad leaves. My friend chose the vegan Grilled Polenta. This included baby spinach, minted chickpeas, avocado and tomato in a poppyseed dressing. The grilled polenta was exactly that, a warm block of creamy polenta.
We had no idea how large the plates were going to be, so we also chose to share a side of Rosemary Roasted Sweet Potato. Clearly we did not need it, just look at the size of those salads!!
They also give you a cute little muffin of bread, (served in a plant pot!!), to have with your meal. This is baked in house that morning and on that day it included beautifully sweet red peppers. Delicious!
Our waiter was ever so attentive and remembered that my friend was vegan so asked if she would like an alternative to butter for her bread. Bonus points for that!
This was the second time I’d been there and on both occasions I was impressed by the food, atmosphere and service. So I really can’t rave about this gem enough!
For 2x salad, 2x juice and 1x side, our total bill came to roughly £33 (inc service of 12.5%) – not too shabby!
